Lily Allen jumped on the music scene in 2006 when Amy Winehouse 's classic Back to Black album was released---and the two ladies were acquaintances rather than close friends.
So why would lovely Lily dedicate a piece of her work to the late songstress who she only calls a semi-pal??
Put simply, the Smile singer wants to shed light on Amy's increased media attention years before her passing, basically alluding to the fact that the spotlight overwhelmed and smothered her till the end.
In a new interview, Lily confessed that the late singer was "too damn interesting for her own good" and she had no idea how Miz Winehouse dealt with all the swarms of attention:
"She was not in a great place when we knew each other, so I don't feel I knew Amy; I knew a version of Amy. What she had to deal with was 10 times anything I had to deal with. She'd sold a hell of a lot more albums than me, and there was a lot more interest in her. There were people outside her home 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I know what that was like on a much smaller level, and I felt trapped. She couldn’t do anything or go anywhere without there being a frenzy; and she was all about life and enjoying herself and socializing, and when that’s taken away from you… she was a prisoner."
Since we've only heard upbeat, kitschy, and sassy songs so far---we're not quite understanding the dedication aspect of Lily's statement.
Perhaps we'll learn more when her album Sheezus hits stores on May 5th!
