Andddddddd his chances for taking home an Academy Award for his critically acclaimed performance in The Master just plummeted! LOLz!
Joaquin Phoenix doesn't care though, which is kind of admirable. The actor -- who made his glorious return to the screen in September after a failed rapping career mockumentary --believes Hollywood's highest honor is "total, utter bullsh*t."
He made his opinion known during a recent interview with highly respected film critic Elvis Mitchell for Interview magazine and explained his position by saying:
"I think it's bulls--t. I think it's total, utter bulls--t, and I don't want to be a part of it. I don't believe in it. It's a carrot, but it's the worst-tasting carrot I've ever tasted in my whole life. I don't want this carrot. It's totally subjective. Pitting people against each other ... It's the stupidest thing in the whole world."
Is it really? Or is he just bitter because he was nominated for Walk the Line and lost?
If we take him at his word, then yes, the award really is stupid and he thought so long before he had his chance to take one home. Phoenix revealed he felt "uncomfortable" when he was nominated while continuing:
"It was one of the most uncomfortable periods of my life when Walk the Line was going through all the awards stuff and all that. I never want to have that experience again. I don't know how to explain it -- and it's not like I'm in this place where I think I'm just above it -- but I just don't ever want to get comfortable with that part of things."
After every Academy voter finds out just how much he despises the Oscars , then maybe he won't. Still, we kinda hope he does because in our minds, talent deserves to be rewarded!
