It's been a while since we heard anything about the remake of Park Chan-wook's Oldboy, but Josh Brolin was so serious about starring in the Spike Lee joint that he asked the South Korean director for permission!
As we have previously mentioned, the actor took over the lead role from Will Smith while Spike replaced Steven Spielberg . Before signing on though, Brolin reached out to Chan-wook to make sure he approved of Hollywood tinkering with his HIGHLY respected 2003 film.
In a recent interview, the Men In Black III star explained:
"I wrote an email to Park, who I really love, when I tried to get him to direct Jonah Hex. He almost did it, and when I let him go, I was like, 'If you're not completely into this, then we'll find something else to do together.' Then I said, 'I want your blessing to do Oldboy' He wrote back this beautiful letter and it said, 'I love remakes and I think it’s great, just don’t do it exactly like we did.'"
First of all, imagine the difference in cinematic history if the guy behind Oldboy decided to direct Jonah Hex. Ha!
Secondly, we think that was a pretty honorable move on Brolin's part. This is not an easy movie to remake and we're sure A LOT of fans don't even want to see it, but at least the remake's star had the decency to make sure Chan-wook approved of the idea.
Since most Americans don't take the time to seek out foreign films, this remake is the only way the majority of the country will get a taste of what they are missing out on!
